Implications of Direct Use of Slag from Ironmaking Processes as Molten Oxide Electrolyte

The thermochemical and electrical behavior of ironmaking slag produced from titanomagnetite concentrates has been assessed in the vicinity its tapping temperature. A combination electrochemical measurements a modified thermal imaging furnace computational thermodynamic calculations was employed to elucidate potential use as molten oxide electrolyte for extraction high-purity metal. results show that presence entrained iron species decreases faradaic efficiency electrolysis. Thermodynamic predictions reveal small window operation between decomposition silica titania, which might result co-reduction titanium silicon ions melt. Practical considerations production metal directly process are discussed, further experimental investigation this material is justified.
